Kevin from DeSmog Blog sent me an email about the cost of gas (or should I say profit to some) now a days.

  • ExxonMobil, everyone’s favorite oil company, is set to announce 4th quarter earnings of $10.37 billion - a paltry $111 million a day.
  • Expected annual earnings for ExxonMobil in 2007 are a whopping $39 billion - or about $106 million a day, $4.4 million an hour and $73,000 a second.

Pretty sobering facts if I do say so myself.

Sure, Exxon’s profits seem crazy, but that is the result of a free market. Remember price controls in the 1970s (I do!). People waited in line for hours for cheap gas. How much is an hour of your time worth? Look at the state controlled oil companies in Mexico and Venezuela. Mexico has always been horribly inefficient, causing the population to overpay greatly. When Chavez kicked out experienced oil companies, their output dropped almost immediately.

Why don’t people complain when an actor get $25 million for standing in front of a camera. How is that “fair”. Think how much poor people have to pay to see a movie to support that salary.

Back when oil was at $10 a barrel, where were all the people feeling sorry for the poor little oil companies?

  2. At first the pic made me laugh, but those are indeed some sobering statistics

I read about some cool products here that are easily adoptable and thought you would find interesting.

PuddinHead… let me guess.. you work for Exxon.. I think you are actually the first person I have ever met online and off who doesn’t grumble over the price of Oil.

Yes, actors and professional atheletes are overpaid.. and teachers are underpaid.. such are injustices of life… but it still doesn’t give gas companies liberties to charge us so much and make a killing off of the profits. I think there’s a definite need to come up with alternative energy.

How, I don’t know.. I will leave that up to the Chemists and Scientists

  5. The U.S. Federal Reserve System was created in 1913. Gasoline has been in use since then as the dominant fuel. Coincidence? I think not.

I wonder how big those numbers would be if the government didn’t get its cut?

  6. I remember as a kid, when cigarettes and gas were the same price. At the time gas was 20 cents a gallon and cigarettes were 20 cents a pack. WOW! A penny a piece…..I’ve since quit smoking, drinking and drugs but, can’t seem to break the driving habit…..

  7. Ironic isn’t it?

    lol…

But it is not funny! It is already happening. In our state we pay almost two US dollars for one l of gas and almost half of the price goes to the government!!! Here 2L of cola is cheaper than one litre of gas. At least I think, because I do not drink cola.
