I am pretty anal about bringing my Envirosax bags to our weekly grocery excursion. I might forget them if we are running errands, but usually we are good about bringing our un-plastic bags to Wegmans, (We moved past the greenwashing Wal-Mart, finally) and I am pretty darn proud (on both accounts). Unfortunately, the small bag, however durable, isn’t enough at times. We usually end up hand carrying it or use paper bags as the last resort. But now with the Savior bags; the problem is easily solved. And it’s made with fun graphics that’s quite kitschy. According to Jessica Shinyeda, co-founder, “it’s really tongue in cheek.”
Pretty impressive and I REALLY love the graphics on these stylish barrel bags. The Gandhi with “Be the Change You Want to See In the World” was especially made for me, figuratively speaking. The bags are very well constructed and the canvas is thick and soft. Although initially I was put off by the short nylon handles, Jennifer Shinyeda, the other brainchild for Savior Bags, assured me that the handles were meant to be carried, “We designed the bag to carry the equivelent of 3 plastic bags of groceries. That can get heavy. If you are carrying two, we felt most comfortable walking down the street carrying them like bags.”
Merrily Shinyeda, which completes the trio of savvy green Ecopreneurs behind Savior Bags, explains that these alternative to plastic bags are made in Arizona under fair labor. So you can do good for the environment with an added perk of keeping the jobs here and not exploiting impoverished countries. With a lot of flack that China is getting for their quality control; American made products seem to be the rage nowadays.
Overall, I am highly impressed with the workmanship of these bags. The graphics are ultra cool, and although my dog sheds so much that tumbleweeds are rolling across the floor; the bag repels her hair along with water and mildew. So furry pet owners; don’t be afraid of this one. The bags are pretty substantial. They will not fit into your purse, however; with the fun graphics; you can carry this around without being all crunchy granola. I think I have a new love! Well definitely a companion to my weekly trip to Wegmans anyways. Score your own bag at the Savior Bags Online Boutique. They are $19.99 a pop and have six tongue in cheek way to “just say no” to plastic.
I don’t know, but it’d be cool to have your own al gore bag ![]()
Very cool idea. Wegman’s does sell their own reusable bags, but we NEVER remember to bring them. Plus, we use plastic bags for taking out the recycling, toting lunches, picking up after the dog, cleaning out the litter box, etc…sometimes you just need a disposable bag.
Nice Bag!
Vow the design is also simple yet powerful indeed! This bags will ensure that there are no more plastic bags used reducing the environmental damage! Thanks a lot!
I was at the grocery store last weekend and there was a promotion going on to promote reusable bags. It was embarrasing that I had gone to the store without my reusable totes — something I almost NEVER do. I couldn’t sneak past the volunteers and when they offered me a reusable tote, I had to decline. Why? Because I have promised myself that I would use store-provided plastic bags before I would use one of those polypropylene bags that are being given away as ‘environmentally correct’ reusable bags. Before I purchased my canvas totes, I researched reusable bags and learned that while the polypropylene bags are made from recycled plastic bottles, the bottles are sent to China to be recycled. The bags are then manufactured in China and shipped by the boatload back to America. What could be less environmentally correct? Kudos to you for you for promoting the use of reusable canvas bags and these are made in America and just too cute! Keep up the good work. I am enjoying your blog.

Good Idea! This nice idea to ban plastic bags and start using paper bags and this will help the nature and global warming very much.
