The Dixie Chicks say it best in one of their songs:

I said I wanna touch the earth
I wanna break it in my hands
I wanna grow something wild and unruly

One my favorite things to do (when the weather permits), get my hands in the dirt, plant something, and wait to see what blossoms. There is some great sense of accomplishment in watching something you planted grow into something beautiful or edible. Well, I just found another easy way to do it for people who aren’t natural green thumbs… and really, who is? Part of the fun, and frustration of gardening is in the trail and error.

Fresh and Green sells a wealth of eco products and stands by a strict “eco-policy” when deciding which products they choose. These fun, Caprisun-looking Blooms in a Bag are one of those products that make the grade with biodegradeable ways to make our gardens come to life.

Everyone loves strawberries, no?

Be pretty in pink with their Pink Blooms.

Tomatoes in the grocery store taste like Styrofoam. Enough said.

The Blooms or Garden in a Bag come in these varieties, too:
Cilantro (I think Cilantro tastes like soap, but for those that love it, here ya go)
Lavender
Oregano
Sage
Viola Blooms
Forget-Me-Not Blooms
English Thyme
They even have an Apple Tree-To-Be!

Fresh and Green consistently find ways to give back to the community by feeding the hungry and starting and sponsoring recycling programs for local schools and businesses. They also support organizations such as Co Op America, Global Green USA and 1% for the Planet. So pick up a couple of these Blooms in a Bag and see what happens.

Crafy Recycling At Ecologue

Crafy Recycling At Ecologue

I admit I do this too.. keep your cell phone charger in the plug. Did you know that this is one way you are using needless energy? Appliances on stand-by can consume up to 20% of your electricity. In a study by Environmental Energy Technologies Division of the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory:

Miscellaneous electricity use now accounts for about one-fifth of all electricity used in U.S. homes, and it’s growing quickly,” says Marla Sanchez, lead author of the study. Miscellaneous uses are becoming relatively more important because some of the conventional uses of energy have become much more efficient (due to EPA and DOE’s voluntary ENERGY STAR Programs, efficiency standards, and other policies) and because people are buying more energy-using appliances that fall into the miscellaneous category.

Ecologue is a site that’s very concerned about these miscellaneous energy uses and wants to do something about it. “Ecologue is dedicated to enabling and inspiring healthy, practical, eco-friendly changes to homes, gardens and everyday life.  With hundreds of videos, articles and practical tips, Ecologue.com helps the new-to-green consumer make easy, everyday changes.  Visitors to the site can learn to save money with home efficiency upgrades, keep a greener lawn, shop for healthier foods, select stylish eco-friendly home designs and more”.

It’s the sister site of HGTV which addresses the concerns its viewers had. I really like the site’s design and seems to have a wealth of information for the concerned consumer. Check them out and tell them that Jolly Green Girl sent you there.

There are those who will not buy any kind of leather because they feel its cruel to buy one. Then there are those who can not give up their leather obsession. Well here’s a compromise. How about recycled leather purses? These are stylish, hip, and yet are gentler to the planet by reusing what’s already here. ReFind Originals are all handmade and crafted by one talented woman.. and I have to say they are in par with top fashion designer purses that goes for much much more.

You can score one of a kind design that’s also Eco-conscious by reducing waste by reusing what’s already there. I am not a big fan of leather bags and shoes in general, but I do own a couple (with an extremely guilty conscious) so its nice that you are not furthering the exploitation of leather in the name of Fashion. It’s hard to give up leather though, so if you must have one… then try ReFind. The handmade bags are simply to die for. No pun intended.

At ReFind Originals, we deconstruct, clean and restore discarded leather apparel and upholstery, transforming it into stunning, one-of-a-kind leather handbags. Each purse is totally unique, buttery-soft and super easy on the environment. Through our craftsmanship, we hope to demonstrate that greener choices in our everyday lives can be beautiful.

I had the pleasure of personally speaking to Anita and not only is she talented; but very gracious as well. Her craftmanship and design abilities are incredible. Purses go for about $250 a pop. These stylish yet classic bags are something you will treasure forever; not only for a season.

I once read that women digest umpteen tubes of lip balm in their lifetime; merely from wearing it. They listed an actual number, but I don’t remember it and I’m not going to look it up. Just know it was a lot, okay? Anyway, once I stopped my gag reflex I immediately considered throwing out every tube I own, including lipstick (quickly decided against it when I thought about how much money I spent on some of those tubes). Next, I at least swore that the ingredient list will be taken into consideration on any future tubes I buy. Here are some of the balms I found that are made up of substances much more edible than those such as Oxybenzone (known to cause everything from hormone disruption to low birth weight), lead (I like L’Oreal, but some of their lipsticks are loaded with the stuff), and other poisons that you would need a degree in chemical biomolecular engineering in order to even pronounce it (try to say that three times fast). To boot, the companies that are making them are doing many other things that deserve a kiss.
Badger Balm almost just had me for the fact that they have a picture of company employees whitewater rafting on their website; they’ve gotta be cool. But then I ask, how does Organic Madagascar Vanilla, Wild African Shea Butter, fragrant Golden Yellow Beeswax sound for exotic ingredients to grace your smacker? Well, that’s the kind of stuff you will find in these lip balms, along with the main ingredient, Extra Virgin Olive Oil.  They scout the world seeking these organic elements and support sustainable agriculture by making responsible purchasing decisions. This may be my new favorite.

Talk about a stocking stuffer that’s better for you than a bunch of candy canes! Kiss My Face will have you ready for the mistletoe with their Holiday Lip Balm Duo Pack. One is naughty (Cheeky Cherry) and the other one nice (Vanilla n’ Ice). Both of them tasty and never use artificial colors. Santa will be happy that these balms are only for our lips; never being animal tested… apparently lipstick is not even fit for a pig.
Being ranked as “one of the safest cosmetics lines in america” as well as working to support women’s health advocacy and human rights issues, Peacekeeper Cause-Metics is a company you want to think of when giving gifts this year. They will even send your thoughtful gift in a customized gift box. You can feel good about this one.

Knowing that what goes upon our lips ultimately can make it into our bodies, Dr. Bronner’s organic lip balms doesn’t use harsh SPF chemicals to shield our delicate smackers from the sun, but rather a natural barrier made of jojoba, avocado, and hemp oils. So your lips will be edible and protected! They have creative flavors such as Orange Ginger and Lemon Lime. Pucker up!

I always have a couple tubes of Burt Bee’s lingering around the bottom of my bag with the dirty Altoids and loose change. Cocoa Butter and beeswax are just a couple of the natural ingredients that make this stuff so creamy and luscious.

Love thy Lips is what they call it and we love it! Mountain Sky Soap started their company in order to stay home with their children who have the middle names of Mountain and Sky. I dig these people. Starting in their basement in 1993, they now use the water from the Canadian Mountains where you can also find their 7000 square foot facility, to make every tube. They come in four flavors: Blackberry, Mint, Raspberry, and Mountain (which is unflavored). I think they need to start working on a Sky flavor now. I think I’ll email them about that.
One of the best- Our grandmothers knew best when they would slather us with Vaseline. Vaseline’s Lip Therapy Petroleum Jelly Advanced Formula, is made with only one ingredient: petrolatum. Good stuff.
My great aunt swore by Crisco. I can’t promise I’ll be carrying around a can of Crisco anytime soon, but I will be sticking with the above lip balms to keep my kisser organically smooth!

eco-fashionstylish organic jacket

After comprising my  Eco-fashion fall style look; I received a press release about another Eco foward fashion designer, Indigenous Design. I LOVE LOVE LOVE their Eco-friendly knits. Not only Indigenous Design purveyers of Organic fabrics but they are also Fair-trade. A definite plus in Jolly Green Girl’s eyes. These stylish duds are J- Crewish but made Eco-conscious in their use of Organic cotton and knits.

Indigenous Design support Fair Trade by establishing cooperatives with textile artisans from all over the world. “Each Indigenous garment is handmade in Indigenous-initiated fair-trade cooperatives in which the female knitters generally make two to three times more than they would have made otherwise.” And now you can get these Eco-fashion duds in World of Goods by Ebay. In a press release by the Press Room:

Consumers have come to trust and recognize the Indigenous brand to stand for integrity and quality in fair-trade and organic apparel,” said Indigenous CEO and co-founder Scott Leonard. “We are involved with WorldofGood.com because we believe the site furthers the message of fair-trade values to consumers and empowers them to make socially responsible decisions.”

By joining World of Good, Indigenous will have the opportunity to reach eBay’s more than 84 million active users, exposing them to the Indigenous’ high-quality, organic and fair-trade apparel that honors both people and planet. Way to step up the game there Indigenous. It’s nice to see that a company will get a high profile exposure while maintaining their green standards.

Some people collect DVDs. Some people collect sea shells (not saying I agree with this chosen collection). Heck, some friends of ours seem to be collecting kids. Well, Laura Bergman lives in Amish Country in Pennsylvania and she collects glass and bottles. She makes it her duty (and love) to roam farmlands and wooded areas picking up the thoughtlessly tossed-aside bottles, and even the random shards that litter the place she calls home. And instead of getting angry about it, she sees beauty in the colorful crystalline fragments and turns them into something wearable.

Laura says, “I have seen baby deer laying in the broken glass, foxes, squirrels and countless other wildlife running through it. Even birds landing in the glass while searching for a meal.” So by collecting this glass she is not only creating works of art made by recycled materials, she is cleaning up the wildlife habitats of her state.

Each piece of jewelry is unique in design, coloring, and history. This self-taught jewelry maker includes a small card with every purchased piece giving the new owner a brief history on the glass. Such as the cobalt blue, which was a glass made throughout the 20th century for common household products such as that smelly Noxzema cream women used to apply on their faces; or the gorgeous ice blue glass made from World War II era Mason Jars that my grandma used to store her homemade jams.

Bottled Up Designs hand makes little pieces of history in the form of earrings and necklace pendants while clearing trash from Pennsylvania.
